Civil Service

The Civil Service Department collaborates with the Civil Service Commission, which is made up of Dina Acevedo, Rosalinda Gonzalez, and Jerry Saenz, on any given issue that needs approval, as well as collaborating with the City Attorney and/or Civil Service Attorney on any legal issues or to acquire a legal opinion. The Civil Service Department is responsible for interpreting Local Government Code Chapter 143: Municipal Civil Service for Firefighters and Police Officers and implementing Local Civil Service Rules. The Civil Service Department also administers entry-level and promotional testing for police officers and firefighters. In addition, the Civil Service Department screens Civil Service entry-level applications, analyzes and prepares the department’s budget for City Manager’s approval, and prepares and presents agenda’s and meetings for any given issue that needs Civil Service Commission approval.

Minimum Qualifications – Police Officer

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Must be able to read and write in English
  • Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of the examination
  • Must not have reached his/her 45th birthday at the time of the examination
  • Completion of 30 accredited college hours; or
  • Two (2) years of military service with an honorable discharge; or
  • Have current certification from Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards; or
  • Must meet all legal requirements necessary to become eligible for future licensing by the Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education

Minimum Qualifications – Firefighter

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Must be able to read and write in English
  • Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of the examination
  • Must not have reached his/her 36th birthday at the time of the examination
  • Must have a High School Diploma; or
  • Must have a G.E.D. and twelve (12) accredited college hours
  • Must be Certifiable or Certified by the Texas Commission of Fire Protection; or
  • Must meet all legal requirements necessary to become eligible for future licensing by the Commission on Fire Protection Personnel Standards and Education

Notice of Examination for Entry-Level Police Officer and Firefighter

An examination will be administered for Entry-Level Police Officer and Firefighter for the City of Mission on Thursday, August 5, 2010. The examination will be administered at 9:00a.m.at the Mission Community Center located at 1420 E. Kika de la Garza Loop, Mission, TX 78572. To receive a copy of the minimum qualifications, Civil Service Application and benefits, please report to the Human Resources Department located at City Hall, 1201 E. 8th Street, Mission, TX 78572 or you may download using the link provided. All completed applications must be submitted to the Human Resources Department. The deadline to accept completed applications is Friday, July 23, 2010.
