Mayor Pro Tem Ruben Plata is a respected public servant, accomplished business leader, and long-standing community advocate who has devoted over two decades to strengthening the City of Mission. A proud graduate of the University of Texas–Pan American, he holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and Accounting, bringing a strong financial and organizational acumen to his role in public office.
Mayor Pro Tem Plata was first elected to the Mission City Council in October 2007 and subsequently earned the trust of voters in four consecutive elections—2008, 2012, 2016, and unopposed victories in both 2020 and 2024. His years of steady leadership and experience have been instrumental in guiding the city through key periods of economic growth, infrastructure development, and community advancement.
Beyond his service in elected office, Mayor Pro Tem Plata has demonstrated unwavering commitment to civic engagement through leadership roles in numerous local and regional organizations. He has served as both a member and chairman of the Greater Mission Chamber of Commerce, Mission Historical Museum, and the United Way of South Texas. He has also played vital roles with the Mission Boys and Girls Club, Mission Economic Development Authority, North American Butterfly Association, Regional Mobility Authority, and Cimarron Country Club.
A leader in both the financial and nonprofit sectors, Mayor Pro Tem Plata is a past president of the Valley Bankers Association and was recognized as the 2007 Small Business Administration Financial Services Champion for South Texas. In 2006, he was honored as Mission’s Man of the Year, a testament to his enduring dedication and service to the community.
Currently, he continues to serve as a board member of the Rotary Club of Mission, where he supports initiatives that uplift local families and promote civic responsibility.
